What are the Different Types of Extended Warranties?
- Jun 14, 2018
Manufacturer's Warranty
Nothing beats the feeling of purchasing a new car, and the last thing you think about is something going wrong with it. We advise that you thoroughly read the paperwork you sign before those shiny new keys get handed over to ensure that you know your rights if the unexpected does happen. Luckily the majority of new cars come with a three-year (and in some cases five year) manufacturer's warranty included. These comprehensively cover most problems that can go wrong with a vehicle.
You should always make sure you read up on what exactly what’s covered and any specific terms and conditions that may apply, these will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
For example, some may restrict the maximum mileage for the warranty to be valid and some may not restrict it at all. Furthermore, it is usually expected that you must keep the vehicle in a good condition and ensuring to get it serviced as per the vehicle handbook recommendations at a minimum.
Used Car Warranty
When you purchase a used vehicle from an independent dealer they may offer a warranty with the car at a cost or sometimes as a whole package.
You can expect these warranties to provide cover for three to twelve months (there are third-party warranties that can even go up to 36 months, see below to find out who!) depending on what type of car it is and what you might feel is suitable for you. However, you might find yourself a better deal online if you wanted to shop around to get the best offer you can.
As always used car warranties also have terms and conditions that you must adhere strictly to, in order to keep it going, so make sure you read through the documentation.
Dealers may offer you the option of extending the term of the warranty or upgrading to a better policy, but you may want to think about shopping around to find a better deal. Keep in mind that the cover available will vary greatly between dealers.
As with a manufacturer's warranty, you'll need to adhere to certain conditions in order for the warranty to remain valid.
Third-Party Warranty
Last but not least you have Third-Party Warranties, this is where Best4 Warranty comes in.
After-market warranties provide you with the option to customise your level of cover to suit your own needs and requirements. Do consider that options will vary depending on the age, make and model of the car.
It is worth noting that in many cases you will be required to provide servicing information. With Best4, if you do not have a valid service record book or printed service history of the vehicle, then as long as you have it serviced at a VAT registered garage within 10,000 miles or 12 months (whichever comes first) from date of purchasing one of our warranties then your car will still be covered.
Of course, always be sure to read the terms and conditions of any third-party warranty and stick to the procedures outlined in documents provided to avoid any delay in the service that they provide.
